The kid’s television show, Yo Gabba Gabba, has a long history with comics. The short stories featured in between skits is often in sequential format, including the reoccurring Super Martian Robot Girl. Yo Gabba Gabba also features varying types of interesting animation so the concept of bring the show’s style and sensibility to a comic anthology only makes sense! The book reads like the show, with a running storyline featuring the main characters and other stories mixed in. The stories each feature a different writer and artist. The result is an eclectic mix of hyper-active, colorful comics geared toward the older end of the Yo Gabba Gabba audience. In many ways, the anthology works beautifully. The range of artwork is impressive, bouncing from cute to surreal to beautiful without feeling choppy. Especially notable are “Nok Nok Bumblebee” by Eric Orchard, which is a gorgeously painted story about a bee in a rocket ship, and “Find” by Frank Pittarese, Jarrett Williams, and Rico Renzi, which throws back to the pop art days. As expected with an anthology, some stories are uneven. An attempt to work in the Dancy-Dance falls flat. However, there is more good than bad and even readers who have outgrown Yo Gabba Gabba will find something to enjoy.
