Cardcaptor Sakura tells the story of fourth grader Sakura. She has the task of re-collecting the scattered “Clow” cards, after discovering an old book in her dad’s library and awakening the book’s guardian Kero-chan. These cards contain and control dangerous spirits. If Sakura can’t collect the cards, there will be dire consequences for the entire world. Working with Kero-chan and her best friend Tomoya, Sakura must hurry to collect the cards before it’s too late to save everyone she loves.
A shojo manga classic, Cardcaptor Sakura is being re-released into four omnibus editions, complete with new color illustration galleries in each edition. Using high quality paper and printing, these editions really show off CLAMP’s lovely artwork. CLAMP’s manga are always visually stunning, but Cardcaptor Sakura is particularly beautiful. There are images of swirling water, wind, and fire, which are just gorgeous.
This story is charming, compelling, and funny. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. I found myself alternately giggling and gasping with worry. Sakura is immediately endearing, neither too clumsy nor too perfect. I was rooting for her from page one. This manga is aimed at tween girls, but its sweet and funny story and its characters will appeal to all ages. There is a little weirdness with a subplot that hints at an adult teacher dating one of Sakura’s fourth grade friends, but it is never explicitly dealt with.
There will be two other omnibus editions released soon and I highly recommend getting all of them. These books are well-printed and definitely worth the money. Plus, the story and Sakura cannot help but make you smile.
