My best friends came up for a delayed Christmas/New Year’s visit this weekend and two comics-related things made me smile. First of all, their six-year-old daughter was appalled to find out that there is a naked little boy in Maurice Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen. She refused to believe her mother or I when we told her that all people have dreams where they are naked and that’s why he was nude in the book. She assured us that she had never had any such dream and, furthermore, had no plans to ever do so! We all got a chuckle out of that one!

Second, I got to use my new Williams-Sonoma Marvel Cakelet Pan (a Christmas present from my parents) and my new mixer (a Christmas present from my brother- and sister-in-law; thanks guys!) to make us yummy treats. This was my first time decorating a cake since I was 14, so they look a little wonky, but I still had fun making them.

What makes me happy this week. I just gave a copy of Nursery Rhyme Comics to my cousin’s new son (a little late as he is already 6 months old) but the look on the dad’s face when he saw it was comics….best gift ever!

I’m thrilled that IDW has announced a third Parker comic. Darwyn Cooke’s adaptations of Donald Westlake’s novels are slick pulpy fun from start to finish and a great match between artist and story.

I might have already mentioned this (I’m so scatter-brained lately I can’t remember anything), but I love Barry Lyga’s Manga Man.  I couldn’t stop giggling and the almost sex scene was had me laughing out loud.  It’s a really creative and meta look at how comics work.  I really hope there is a sequel in the works.  My teens also can’t put it down.  It hasn’t been checked out yet, because they all come in and read it in one sitting.

I was pretty psyched to see that Avatar: The Last Airbender is coming out with a graphic novel written by Gene Luen Yang, Avatar The Last Airbender: The Promise.

I had to share the awesome street art in Toronto highlighted via Comics Alliance.

Batarangs everywhere!  I mean, I’ve always thought there must be batarangs just all over Gotham, making batty porcupines of all the telephone polls and walls around the city.  Much like there should be Spider-Man webbing just all over New York.

I’m happy that our library has a friendly local comic shop, Krypton Comics, that’s willing to let us ride their coat-tails for Free Comic Book Day, and place an order soon through them to help give out comics.  It’s a win-win for both the library and the store.  We get to encourage reading and we help him get more business by saying “If you want more than these two titles, go visit them!”
