Highlights from the past week, with commentary from the NFNT gang:
Black Rose Alice Volume 1 (Viz, 9781421571607)
Robin: I just realized that Black Rose Alice is by Setona Mizushiro, a long time favorite creator of mine — she did After School Nightmare, which remains one of my absolute favorite mangas (as well as X-Day, from years back via Tokyopop.) Her art is always gorgeous, and she delights in absolutely ripping apart manga tropes and exposing the sheer weirdness of many of the standard set ups. Her take on vampires will be fascinating. *makes grabby hands*
Jenny: New Setona Mizushiro! After School Nightmare was twisty goodness, so I look forward to jumping into Black Rose Alice.
Cardcaptor Sakura – Complete Collection (NIS America)
Jessikah: I am really excited to see Cardcaptor Sakura being rereleased. I mean really, really.
Complete ElfQuest Volume 1 (Dark Horse, 9781616554071)
Thomas: Elfquest is one of those series a lot of my friends have read but I somehow missed. I will try not to miss this new opportunity!
The Death of Archie: a Life Celebrated (Archie Comics, 9781627389822)
Anna: “The Death of Archie” promises to be a historic event, which I think is good enough reason to read it – how could I call myself a comics person and miss it?
The Graveyard Book Volume 1 (Harper Collins, 9780062194817)
Jessikah: I’m really looking forward to the adaptation of The Graveyard Book.
Kaze Hikaru Volume 22 (Viz, 9781421535869)
Jenny: Every new volume of Kaze Hikaru is reason to celebrate! I just want to wave my arms and fangirl as loudly as possible so Viz not only keeps releasing them but considers doing so at a rate greater than one a year. *pretty please*
Manga Classics: Pride and Prejudice (Udon, 9781927925171)
Robin: There have been many adaptations of classic novels into the graphic novel format over the years, some more successful than others. The new manga classics line from Udon (Les Miserables is coming out at the same time) is the effort that I hope will work for readers. They’ve worked hard to make the adaptations faithful but also have fun with the manga traditions within the retelling, and there are both softcover and hardcover editions depending on what will work best for your library. Full disclosure — I do know the Udon folks from my many visits to TCAF, which many of their staff also run, and their appearances at ALA, and thus I did get a bit of a behind the scenes look at how much work they put in to these titles.
Short Peace (Sentai)
Jenny: Short Peace is definitely on my watch-this list.
Spell of Desire Volume 1 (Viz, 9781421567754)
Jenny: I want to take a look at Spell of Desire just because it’s josei and there’s not nearly enough of that published in English. And since I like Ohmi’s Midnight Secretary well enough, office-vampire romantic melodrama though it is, I’m happy to give another of her works a shot.
Yellow, Blue and Gray (Marvel, 9780785188315)
Garrett: I had no idea that there was a new Loeb and Sale collection coming out. I’ve got Yellow and Blue (Daredevil and Spider-man) but I had never gotten the chance to read Gray (Hulk). They were tales from the very early careers of the characters, and I thought they were extremely well-conceived and executed. 60s aesthetics, gorgeous art, young heroes learning the ropes, learning how to fail…really great stuff.
