Highlights from the past week, with commentary from the NFNT gang:
Batman: the Dark Knight Volume 3: Mad (DC Comics, 9781401246198)
Thomas: I understand the New 52 is all about reinventing classic characters for new readers, and I actually like Mad Hatter’s story, but does he have to be a serial killer like all the other villains these days? Kind of makes Batman’s no-kill rule look silly if he keeps giving mass murderers second chances as opposed to themed villains who commit non-lethal crimes.
Batman: Lil’ Gotham Volume 2 (DC Comics, 9781401247232)
Thomas: Oh look, themed villains who commit non-lethal crimes! I’m pacified now.
Black Butler Volume 17 (Yen, 9780316376709)
Thomas: Anime fan-ticipation over the new season of Black Butler means the manga is in higher demand than usual.
Doom Patrol Omnibus (DC Comics, 9781401245627)
Thomas: Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol is the best thing that ever happened to that team, everyone go pick up the omnibus and never let it go!
Garrett: Oh myyyyy…a new Doom Patrol Omnibus? I think my birthday list just got a new addition.
Dr. Slump: The Movies (Films 1-5) (Eastern Star)
Marissa: I am so excited for the Dr. Slump movies! I absolutely love the manga, and I know they have an anime and movies, but they have never been released in America before. I am definitely getting them for my personal collection!
Monster Perfect Edition Volume 1 (Viz, 9781421569062)
Thomas: Praise be unto Urasawa, patron saint of cliffhangers, suspenseful are we meager readers.
Problem Children are Coming From Another World, Aren’t They? (Sentai)
Allen: Sentai’s offering wins the Best Title of the Week award
Runaways: Complete Collection Volume 1 (Marvel, 9780785185581)
Thomas: Not a bad entry point into Marvel. This series is responsible for the conversion of some of my friends into comics readers.
Renata: I’M SO happy they’re reprinting Runaways in a collected TPB form! I’ve replaced so many of the manga-size volumes after only one or two circs. The physical quality was so terrible for those books but I kept trying to replace them because I liked Runaways so much and wanted kids to have access. Huzzah!
Andrew S: I’ve not read Runaways before but it’s been on my list to read for a while. I’ve avoided buying it after hearing Renata’s and others’ horror stories of the manga falling apart quickly, so I’m excited to see it coming out in trade!

Soul Eater Not Volume 3 (Yen, 9780316376662)?Renata: I just had to look up what Soul Eater Not is. A lot of my teens are crazy for regular Soul Eater, so I’d better order that spinoff for them.
X-Men: Magneto: Testament (Marvel, 9780785191728)
Renata: I’m excited for the reprint of Magneto Testament. I love Greg Pak’s work and I love Magneto, so I’m glad this is available again.
