Highlights from the past week, with commentary from the NFNT gang:
Gangsta Volume 2 (Viz, 9781421564531)
Jenny: Gangsta’s first volume caught and maintained my interest with its scratchy, bold art, dark world-building, and intense characters and left me eager for the second.
Persona 3 the Movie 1: Spring of Birth (Aniplex)
Allen: I’m excited for Persona 3 The Movie. Just like Persona 4: The Animation, the movie is a summarized adaptation of the video game. It stars a group of teens who have the special ability to traverse the world during The Midnight Hour, a strange phenomenon that sends people to a different plane of reality overrun with monsters. By night, they do battle with monsters in an attempt to solve the mystery of the Midnight Hour. By day, they engage in fairly atypical high school shenanigans.
The Return of Zita the Spacegirl (First Second, 9781596438767)
Robin: My niece is ALMOST old enough for this, and I am just counting the time until I can give them all to her. Also, that Ben Hatke, he’s a charmer, and he does awesome backflips.
Andrew S: I’m sad that this is the last book in the trilogy, but what a fantastic series that Ben Hatke has given us. Fantastic characters, gorgeous illustrations, and a lovely story.
Elizabeth: I agree, I am so excited for this book. I love this character and this world and I’m really going to miss them. Zita is FANTASTIC. Highly recommend it.
What Did You Eat Yesterday? Volume 2 (Vertical, 9781939130396)
Jenny: Yoshinaga’s great at subtle, gradual character and relationship developments side-by-side with lots of delicious-sounding food I wish I had the skill and patience to make. I want to see what she reveals about her characters next! I want her to arrange for someone to cook all the recipes for me!
