Highlights from the past two weeks, with commentary from the NFNT gang:
Adventures of Superman Volume 1 (DC Comics, 9781401246884)
Thomas: This will be the comic I throw at people who say they never read Superman’s comics because “every story ends with how perfect he is, boring!”
Adventure Time: Sugary Shorts Volume 1 (BOOM! Studios, 9781608863617)
Abby: Adventure Time is exciting for me. So far, the AT comics have been really solid and going out constantly at my library. Beemo wanting to be a princess in the last one I read was too adorable. I melted a bit.
Books of Magic: New Edition (DC Comics, 9781401246860)
Renata: I’ll probably order the new edition of Books of Magic for my teen GN collection–Neil Gaiman is perennially popular, even if that one, in my opinion, is not his strongest work.
Daytripper Deluxe Edition (DC Comics, 9781401245115)
Andrew S: I’m interested in seeing what the Deluxe Edition of Daytripper looks like, because it’s one of my favorite graphic novels that has come out in the last couple of years. I’m hoping that it adds some additional notes, drawings, etc to it that might…maybe, just make it worth buying again. Maybe.
Final Crisis: New Edition (DC Comics, 9781401245177)
Thomas: Will this event age well? It seems more mired in its surrounding continuity than any other Crisis-level trade.
Itty Bitty Hellboy (Dark Horse, 9781616554149)
Andrew S: ‘m always up for more adventures in the Hellboy realm with BPRD Hell on Earth and Itty Bitty Hellboy. I had a chance to read an electronic ARC of Itty Bitty Hellboy and thought that it was a cheery, funny, bright look at the Hellboy world….which is completely weird as we’re used to seeing them as dark and moody and brooding, but still fun.
Jessikah: I second the excitement for Itty Bitty Hellboy. Too adorable? No way!
Anna: I loved Itty Bitty Hellboy too!
Thomas: I feel mean for criticizing a children’s rendition of Hellboy, but it could have used more humor that derived from the source material. The style is cute and attractive, but the script needs to borrow a page from Tiny Titans.
Kurt Cobain: When I Was an Alien (One Peace Books, 9781935548515)
Traci: I’m curious to see this. I just, I don’t what it’s going to be. I’m hoping it’s better than other biographical comics, but I just don’t know.
Over Easy (Drawn & Quarterly, 9781770461536)
Andrew S: Over Easy by Drawn & Quarterly caught my attention, just because it sounds fascinating and I can’t wait to see how the artist has captured the 70’s time period of drugs and hippies and everything else.
Powerpuff Girls Volume 1 (IDW, 9781613779064)
Jessikah: I’m a life long fan of Power Puff Girls, and I would love to see them become popular again! Second that sentiment with Samurai Jack. I won’t apologize for my love of Cartoon Network titles.
Regular Show Volume 1 (BOOM! Studios)
Thomas: I have been a hysterical fan of KC Green ever since reading his brief webcomic Anime Club and Regular Show has been an excellent outlet for further exaggerated, rough-and-tumble friendships.
Sex Criminals Volume 1 (Image, 9781607069461)
Renata: I’m excited to check out the trade of Sex Criminals! I’ve heard nothing but good things but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.
Abby: I’m excited to read Sex Criminals, too (although a bit afraid to put it on hold where my co-workers might see…). I’ve been told it’s awesome.
Thomas: Much like Saga before it, this series was hyped to high heaven to the point that I was nearly prepared to join the backlash, except then I read it and was hooked.
Anna: I’m psyched for Sex Criminals. Like everyone else, I’ve heard amazing things and just didn’t happen to pick up the first issue.
Spice and Wolf – the Complete Series: Season 1 & Season 2 (Funimation)
Jessikah: I am glad to see Spice and Wolf being re-released.
