Highlights from the past week, with commentary from the NFNT gang.
Atomic Robo: Real Science Adventures Volume 2 (Red 5 Comics, 9780986898556)
Anna: I always enjoy Atomic Robo. Though it’s not new, I’ll be purchasing vol. 2 for my library this week!??Robin: Carl Sagan jokes FTW! I too was thinking I’ll be checking in on my Atomic Robo volumes to make sure they’re holding up, and order some new copies.
Breath of Bones: a Tale of the Golem (Dark Horse, 9781616553449)
Gail: Looking forward to Breath of Bones. I have collected the individual issues of this story and am excited to see it on the graphic novel book shelves.
?Tessa: I’m also interested in Breath of Bones – I hadn’t heard of it before but if it involves a Golem, I am so there.
Dance Class Volume 7: School Night Fever (Papercutz, 9781597075046)
Jennifer W: I have a very enthusiastic group of fans for Dance Class – they will be very happy to see another collection of these funny, dance-themed short comics.
Insufficient Direction (Vertical, 9781939130112)
Caitlin: True-life comics from the marriage of Moyoco and Hideaki Anno. I like to be reminded that there are real people behind every fictional world. This looks good!
Jessikah: I am also curious about Insufficient Direction. Hideaki Anno has been such a mysterious figure in the anime world. I’ve heard tons of rumors about him for years, and it would be grand to see how his wife views him and their marriage.
Jenny: Add me to the very interested list for Insufficient Direction. I enjoyed Moyoco Anno’s Sakuran and am patiently waiting for the next volume of the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga (by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto) to exist. (Amusingly, I’ve only seen the psychedelic last episode of the original anime series.) When I realized the imaginations behind these things were married and that she wrote about daily life with him, my curiosity was piqued.
Jellaby Volume 1: Lost Monster (Capstone, 9781434264206)
Jessikah: I am so happy to see Jellaby back in print. I absolutely adored it when it first came out, and so did all the children at my library. It’s a wonderful child friendly graphic novel, and I was heartbroken when I heard that it was going out of print.
Gail: I agree with you about Jellaby — so glad to see it being republished.
Nancy Drew Diaries #1 (Papercutz, 9781597075015)
?Jennifer W: I’m interested to see Papercutz’ GN for Nancy Drew Diaries – I wasn’t very impressed with the new reboot of Nancy Drew, and I thought the art for Papercutz gns for Clue Crew was awful, but kids are very enthusiastic about both series.
Will Eisner’s Contract with God Trilogy (New Printing) (W.W. Norton, 9780393061055)
?Thomas: Always bet on Eisner – his talent and influence only get more apparent with age.
