This is a book for fans of the (now canceled) Young Justice TV show, or for those who are looking to read up a little on the characters before watching. It contains adventures that several characters went on in between episodes or what they were doing just off screen. In this book we learn where Superboy got his black and red t-shirts, as well as his aversion to monkeys; we learn why the Terror Twins were headed to Belle Reve; we see Robin, Superboy, Aqualad, Kid Flash, and Miss Martian bond around a campfire and start truly becoming a team; and we get to view the fight against Amazo from Artemis’s point of view and how Batman and Green Arrow convince her to join the team. It’s a great supplement to a great show.
The art in the book is also great. It’s dynamic, cartoony, and keeps the characters recognizable without trying to ape the style the show is drawn in. While reading this book isn’t necessary to understand the show, having a basic understanding of what’s going on in the show is necessary to understand this book. That’s kind of a shame, because the stories in this book are entertaining and well thought out. That said, if you are a fan of the show, it’s a great read that helps shed more light on the beloved characters.
This book, like the show, is aimed at children. The level of violence is the same as that of the show. While I wouldn’t give this to the very young, anyone over the age of 8 should have no problem with this book.
