Highlights from the past two weeks, with commentary from the NFNT gang:
Accel World – Set 1 (Viz)
Michael: I found Accel World pretty good. And I thought its weak point was the second arc. So if one were to watch it, Set 1 is the disc set to get.
A + X Volume 2: = Amazing (Marvel, 9780785166757)
Michael: A+X is a fantastically amusing series and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone who likes comics.
Batman and Robin Volume 3: Death of the Family (DC Comics, 9781401242688)
Red Hood and the Outlaws Volume 3: Death of the Family (DC Comics, 9781401244125)
Traci: Death of the Family is my totally favorite story arc.
Crayon Shin Chan Volume 1-3 (One Peace Books, 9781935548133, 9781935548140, 978-1935548157)
Jenny: I’m curious as to how One Peace’s Crayon Shinchan manga will read in comparison to Funimation’s crazy-but-fun localization of the animated series. I shared so many hysterical laughs over that show, which just made me cry harder over author Yoshito Usui’s accidental death in 2009. In the absence of real-world Chocobees to binge on in his memory, I should take a look at the original manga and see where all the ridiculousness started.
High School of the Dead: Drifters of the Dead (Sentai)
Allen: I’m surprised that it took this long to release the Highschool of the Dead OVA to be released. I’ve been wanting to see it, if only to get the whole HOTD experience. The OVA holds the promise for a lot of fanservice from what I hear…
Joker: Clown Prince of Crime (DC Comics, 9781401242589)
Traci: I was wondering what that Joker Clown Prince of Crime tpb was – I’ll have to check that out.
Soulless Volume 3 (Yen, 9780316182034)
Jenny: Steampunk fantasy Soulless (Gail Garriger and REM) continues to be fun and attractive, with its snarky dialogue and period costumes. I wonder if they’re going to adapt the teen series to manga someday, as well?
Sunny Volume 2 (Viz, 9781421555263)
Jenny: I really liked the first volume of Taiyo Matsumoto’s Sunny and want to see how the adrift-but-sheltered kiddos continue to deal with their individual circumstances as they struggle with being children while taking on the adult responsibilities life has too-soon thrust on them.
Tune Volume 2: Still Life (First Second, 9781596437609)
Traci: I really liked the first volume of Derek Kirk Kim’s Tune; I’m looking forward to the 2nd volume.
Wolf Children (Funimation)
Jenny: I very much want to see director Mamoru Hosada’s Wolf Children. It sounds like it’s a beautiful family story that’s going to make me reach for the tissues more than once.
X-Men Volume 1: Primer (Marvel, 9780785168003)
Michael: The adjective-less X-Men series made of all ladies is a delight to read. If nothing else because Storm deserves to be leader of every team she is on and it is great to see her step up and lead.
Yotsuba&! Volume 12 (Yen, 9780316322324)
Jenny: Kiyohiko Azuma’s Yostsuba&! is always a joy. I have already ordered my personal copy of volume 12 and await its giggle-filled pages with glee.
