Highlights from the past week, with commentary from the NFNT gang:
Anohana: The Flower we Saw that Day – Complete Series (NIS America)
Jenny: Anohana is on my list of things to watch, as the animation looks attractive, the story sounds involving, and I’ve heard nothing but praise for it. I just keep putting it off because I know it will make me cry.
Black Butler Volume 15 (Yen, 9780316254199)
Jenny: I’m always impatient for more Black Butler! Toboso’s dark, twisty takes on familiar names and stories are a fun, unpredictable, and pleasantly unnerving diversion from the real world.
The Last of Us: American Dreams (Dark Horse, 9781616552121)
Robin: I’m very excited to read Last of Us: American Dreams. I admit I’m a bit of a Faith Erin Hicks fangirl, and I was a bit worried that I might now understand this titles if I wasn’t also going to play the game (since it’s a prequel to the game Last of Us), but I’ve been reassured that it stands alone. I’ll never get enough of Hicks’s style, and this appears to be the kind of intriguing, tough, girl-surviving-in-a-post-virus-apocalypse world tale I like.
Jennifer W: I want to read that too, just because it’s Faith Erin Hicks, even
though it’s totally not the genre I’d normally read.
Allen: I didn’t know they were making a GN for The Last of Us. Good thing it’s a prequel, I’d hate for anything to cheapen that ending.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children: the Graphic Novel (Yen, 9780316245289)
Abby: I am really interested to see how Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children translates into the graphic format. It was already so visual. I am hoping the pictures the author found that inspired the story will still be involved. It was such a good read – should be fun to see what changes were made for the different format.
Gail: I just got my copy of Miss Peregrine’s Home to review so looking forward to this one for sure.
Therma Romae – Complete Collection (Eastern Star)
Jenny: I’d love to see the 3-episode Thermae Romae series. Flash animation isn’t something I’d normally get too excited about, but for earnest, uptight Lucius I’d happily give it a whirl.
Caitlin: This one caught my eye too. I hadn’t heard of it before, but the premise – a Roman architect travels through time and is inspired by modern Japanese bath houses – sounds like ridiculous fun.
Uzumaki 3-in-1 Deluxe Edition (Viz, 9781421561325)
Abby: I’m really excited for the 3-in-1 Uzumaki. I pre-ordered it for my library months ago. And just in time for Halloween!
