This week’s highlights, with commentary from the NFNT gang:
Big Nate: Game On (Pocket Books, 9781449427771)
Snow: I just finished Big Nate Game On. I’m not a sports fan, but it was really cute. I am very addicted to the Big Nate books, both the comic collections and the hybrid novels.
Jennifer W: We love Big Nate at our library – personally, I think they are a LOT funnier than Wimpy Kid.
Castle Waiting Volume 2: Definitive Edition (Fantagraphics, 9781606996331)
Andrew: I’m itching to get my hands on the reissue of Castle Waiting. I’ve just been re-reading the first volume and it’s every bit as good as I remembered.
Gail: Me too! I am hoping to be able to introduce it to my students in the near future.
Jennifer W: I was introduced to Castle Waiting in grad school and…um…never Got The Point. I know everybody else in the world but me apparently loves it, but I just don’t get it.
Snow: Do you know what’s different between this volume and the previously released volume? I’d love to have the definitive, but there’s a cost issue there.
Andrew: Three more issues that tie things up a bit. Apparently Fantagraphics will sell you just those issues for $8?
Get Jiro (DC Comics/Vertigo, 9781401228279)
Michael: Get Jiro is a really imaginative book about a city run by two rival mobs who have opposing philosophies about food. It’s really clever and has an interesting plot.
Holiday Wars Volume 1: the Holiday Spirit (Th3rd World Studios, 9780983216148)
Michael: Holiday Wars is a webcomic where various holidays fight for supremacy, much like the Rise of the Guardians movie. if you liked that, give this a look.
Twilight Saga: New Moon Volume 1 (Yen Press, 9780316217187)
Jennifer W: I’m not sure if buying New Moon was a good idea or not – the first graphic adaptation was HUGELY popular, but it came out while Twilight was still a Big Deal. I bought it for the library, but not sure if it will go or not.
