This week’s highlights, with commentary from the NFNT gang:
Earth 2 Volume 1: the Gathering  (DC Comics, 9781401237745)
Matthew: Earth 2 is probably my favorite new title out of DC’s most recent wave of new titles.  Granted, my opinion is biased and my hopes were high as I’m a huge fan of James Robinson and Nicola Scott… but they’re both putting forth some of the best work of their lives in this title, in my professional opinion.  The first issue was an awesome fake-out after the press going into the new series and how Earth 2 is a different world than the world the rest of the new DC Comics titles are built around.  I shan’t spoil the twist here but suffice it to say it confirmed right away that Robinson was not going to fall back on the tried-and-true standards that set up so many other alternate-Earth stories.
Hand Drying in America (Pantheon, 9780307906908)
Caitlin: I’m excited about Ben Katchor’s new book – I love the deadpan oddness of his comics and am looking forward to more.
Queen’s Blade – Complete Collection (Media Blasters)
Allen: Queen’s Blade is an…interesting series. It’s a fantasy series that isn’t afraid to show off some (okay, a lot) of skin from its largely female cast.
Trigun – The Complete Series (Funimation)
Snow: I’m not a big anime person, but I did love Trigun. It passed my treadmill test: I work out in the mornings, on the treadmill in my craft room, while watching TV on my Roku. The show I pick has to be interesting enough to make me actually get out of bed at 5:30 and get onto the treadmill. Trigun definitely did that.
