What’s Making Us Happy This Week

This week I’m happy that I’m officially lined up to do a presentation about graphic novels for adults at this year’s Iowa Library Association conference! For the past few years I’ve appreciated the good selection of presenters on teens’ and kids’ comics but not seen anything about adult collections so this year I put on my big-boy pants and decided to put something together myself.

Not nearly as exciting as Andrew’s news, but I saw The Avengers last night and it was pretty amazing.

My workshop in Burbank – Who’s Afraid of Comic Books?! – for CLA went off without any fatal hitches.  There was a great conversation among the amassed librarians about how best to develop our graphic novel collections, and how to stand up for them when the time arises.  And our professional panel consisting of Ed Brubaker, Hope Larson, Stan Sakai, and Steven Seagle was informative, gracious, and so much fun.  Everyone seemed to have a great time, and the bacon-wrapped hot dog I had for lunch at Brubaker’s suggestion was magnificent (in the words of my co-presenter Amanda Jacobs Foust, “I will eat whatever Ed Brubaker tells me to.”)  A terrific day all in all.  Big thanks to the attendees, to the creators, and to CLA for giving me the chance to put it all together!

My news feels very boring now, but the local middle school worked with my library to do a 7th grade graphic novel project.  200 kids came through and looked at different titles.  Many of them had never read any graphic novels before and most checked out books before they left.  It made me really happy to get kids appreciating graphic novels.

I wasn’t sure I had anything in particular making me happy, but then I remembered the awesomeness of seeing Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, heaping praise upon Faith Erin Hicks, and that made me super happy.  I love hearing what my favorite creators get excited about, especially when its other creative work.

To top it all off, Konietzko also just posted another one of his video references for his animators, this time for a kid dancing in the famous episode, “The Headband.”  Avatar fans, I know you know which one that is.

She is currently the President of the Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table for ALA. She was a judge for the 2007 Eisner awards, helped judge the Boston Globe Horn Book Awards in 2011, and contributes to the Good Comics for Kids blog at School Library Journal. She regularly gives lectures and workshops on graphic novels, manga, and anime at comics conventions including New York and San Diego Comic-Con and at the American Library Association’s conferences. Her guide, Understanding Manga and Anime (Libraries Unlimited, 2007), was nominated for a 2008 Eisner Award.
