Cupcake and Eggplant are best friends. Cupcake has a bakery in the city and plays the drums in a band. When Eggplant talks about his trip to Turkey to visit his aunt, Cupcake is super excited for him and even more so when he finds outs that Eggplants’ aunt knows Turkish Delight, the world’s greatest pastry chef. Eggplant invites Cupcake on the trip and he has to sell a ton of baked goods to save enough money to go to Turkey and meet his idol. When Eggplant loses his job, Cupcake offers his ticket to Turkey so that he can visit his aunt. While Eggplant is in Turkey, Cupcake is depressed and bored with his bake shop, but a gift from Turkish Delight re-energizes his baking. Using traditional spices like saffron threads and cardamom seeds, Cupcake is inspired again. Bake Sale is adorable, funny and filled to the brim with whimsy. The illustrations are colorful and bursting with emotion. The friendship between Cupcake and Eggplant is remarkable and genuine. There are seven recipes for the confections that appear in the graphic novel. When all is said and done this “sweet” book is a must read for kids and adults of all ages.
