As you know from Robin’s last post, Snow and I had the honor of being on the graphic novel judging committee for the Cybils. The winners were announced today.
We chose two winners, one for readers 12 and under and one for 13 and above: Amelia Rules: Superheroes and American Born Chinese, respectively. These were chosen from short lists of five, put together by a nominating committee.
I loved being a judge (hey, being judgemental comes naturally to me!), and I got to read so many great books. Our committee was very torn between American Born Chinese and the new Castle Waiting collection, but we finally agreed that American Born Chinese deserved yet another honor because (at least, from my point of view) it was a fully realized and complete work of art. In one small volume, Gene Yang hits every note: writing, art, ideas, form, and, best of all, ABC is perfectly pitched for teen readers. Here’s to its continuing march towards world domination!
