<description>I had the pleasure of moderating that panel (note slight attempt to &#039;suck up&#039;) and the question of what defines a classic presents some pretty maleable answers. To use a song or music analogy-there are those groups or singers that come on the radio and no one else is around that make you sing out loud-ABBA(dancing queen), Barry Manilow(i write the songs or copa cabana), The Ramones(iwanna be sedated) The Clash (rock the casbah) even Celine Dion (my heart will go on). they are like candy, you cant help but snag some and chew it down before you get caught.
And yes, Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon), U2 (Joshua Tree), REM (Green) would count as classic albums...but do you listen to them all the way through?
I think when we look back at Sandman, Watchmen, The Spirit, and Maus we can see the foundation for todays new great talents as it was under construction. Today&#039;s talented men and women can count on those classics as the influences that got them started.
The guys in Zepplin, the Stones, The Who, the Faces all point to early American blues pioneers as thier influences. They took those sounds from the delta and refined-or destroyed and reconstructed(thank you mr hendrix) the music into something that amazed us.
We can listen to those old Robert Johnson recordings and understand why he lit the fires that he did but we wont play the hell out of the record like we would with Back in Black.
Same thing applies to the gn publishing industry today. We appreciate what the founding artists created, and yes Watchmen and V will continue to sell but there&#039;s a whole new generation at the door with a new set of classics. Some is just brain candy and some will have a pretty deep message.
It&#039;s a cool time to be here isnt it?
