Here’s our staff highlights for the past two weeks — all the titles, creators, programs, conferences, and library shenanigans that made our week, comics-wise! Some of us were at the American Library Association’s Annual Conference in Las Vegas while others found their happys closer to home.
Congressman John Lewis & Stan Lee!
I wasn't at ALA, but my happy is this picture which was posted afterwards. It's very representative of the type of blending of cultures, interests, life-experiences, etc., which occurs at ALA, but which also occurs every day in libraries across the country. -Snow
Anime Expo this past weekend! -Allen
Darwin Carmichael & Erstwhile
My happy is a double. I recently got my print versions of books for two web comics I read. Darwin Carmichael is going to Hell, and Erstwhile. I contributed to both Kickstarters to fund the printing. -Jessikah
Meeting Deb Aoki
I am going to write a longer take on ALA at large, but my official comics-related Happy from the event was meeting Deb Aoki, who was every bit as knowledgeable and enthusiastic in person as she is online. Deb is on twitter @debaoki and maintains a comics blog, mangacomicsmanga.com. -Thomas
Best & Worst Manga @ ALA
My ALA Happy was the amazing response we got to our Best and Worst Manga panel. Thomas, Deb, and the very smart Christopher Butcher (comics212.net) came up with a fantastic list of great (and a few terrible) titles that libraries should consider adding (or NOT adding) to their collections. The full list can be found here. -Eva
Comics Bakery Readers Theater
While at ALA I was happy that I made time between meetings and weightier programs for some frivolous stuff like watching Jerzy Drozd, Dave Roman, and Raina Telgemeier act out scenes from their comics with sound effects and audience participation. -Andrew
Free! Eternal Summer
The first episode of Free! Eternal Summer premiered July 2nd. And since it was my birthday, it felt like a present! -Emily
