Hot Off the Press!

This week’s highlights, with commentary from the NFNT gang:

Animal Crackers: a Gene Luen Yang Collection (Slave Labor Graphics, 9781593621834)

Russ: If the Animal Crackers collection is the same, it’s already been reviewed a few times! Not that it’s bad, but it does make one wonder how many times SLG is going to re-release it.

Avengers: The Children’s Crusade (Marvel Comics, 978078513638)

Michael: I wrote a long form review of this here.

The Best American Comics 2012 (Houghton Mifflin, 9780547691121)

Caitlin: I’m curious to see what made it into this year’s anthology. Looks like Francoise Mouly is the special guest editor this time, so that should be a nice collection.

Building Stories (Pantheon, 9780375424335)

Caitlin: I would love to get my hands on this! I’m always interested in what Chris Ware does with both content and composition, though I wonder how difficult it would be to keep the different parts of this project together in a library. Still: want.

The City of Ember: the Graphic Novel (Random House, 978-0606268103)

Jennifer: I’ve got a copy of this on my shelf, but haven’t read it yet. I never read the original books, but I do get asked for them occasionally, so the movie didn’t totally destroy the fan base.

Snow: I have read the novel and I also reviewed the graphic novel and even though I’m picky about my adaptations, I liked the graphic novel. I thought they did a good job with it.

Russ: City of Ember is actually in my queue to review here.  I agree with Snow, they did a good job with it.

Deadman Wonderland – Complete Series (Funimation)

Michael: This is a wonderful anime. Morbid and mysterious, the fact that it takes place in an amusement park helps to drive the darkness in it home further because it’s contrasted to what should be a fun setting. Worth watching (especially since it’s fairly short), but not appropriate for children or younger teens.

Fear Itself: Avengers Academy (Marvel Comics, 9780785152019)

Fear Itself: Invincible Iron Man (Marvel Comics, 9780785157748)

Michael: While the main event of “Fear Itself” was poorly conceived and executed, both Avengers Academy and Iron Man pulled off decent storylines from it. Not necessarily worth buying on their own, but if you follow either series don’t skip these.

Geronimo Stilton Volume 11: We’ll Always Have Paris (NBM/Papercutz, 9781597073479)

Jennifer: I automatically order the Geronimo Stilton comics – not my cup of tea, but the kids love them. We’ll Always Have Paris is already in their hot little hands.

Kane Chronicles Book 1: Red Pyramid: the Graphic Novel (Harper Collins, 9781423150695)

Snow: This is my “I haven’t read the book yet”, so I’m interested to see the graphic novel adaptation.

Kekkaishi Volume 34 (Viz, 9781421541976)

Jenny: My system needs to catch up on Kekkaishi (we’re 10 books behind!).  I enjoyed the anime adaptation, and the books are even better.  Supernatural shonen action with heart.

Loveless 2 in 1 Edition, Volume 1 (Viz, 9781421549903)

Snow: I’m glad that I’ll be able to catch up on this, now that VIZ has picked it up.

Maid Sama! Complete Collection (Sentai)

Jenny: Maid Sama!’s fun, but it’s not as sharp and thoughtful as the manga.  It comes off as more low-budget screwball comedy, which is fine and all, but a bit of a let-down if you’re looking for the genuine emotions and character development of the books (which I hope somebody rescues from the Tokyopop black hole so I can read the rest!).

Moomin: The Complete Lars Jansson Comic Strip Volume 7 (Drawn & Quarterly, 9781770460621)

Jennifer: I am so excited to hear about a new Moomin volume! I don’t know how I missed that they were still being released – I think I missed volume 6 as well! I have a couple of these in the library and, sadly, they don’t check out much but I own the first five myself and love them. I did go out on a limb and buy the Pippi comics for the library and I’m anxiously awaiting them.

Natsume’s Book of Friends Season 1 & 2 Premium Edition (NIS America)

Snow: I definitely want to see this. I hope the anime is as moving — and pretty — as the manga.

Jenny: if I could afford the Premium Editions for Natsume’s Book of Friends for my personal collection, I’d be all over them (I may be, anyway, if I’m not careful).  I’ve watched and loved all four seasons streaming and think they did a wonderful job of adapting the manga.  The whole production’s lovely and very well-cast, particularly Nyanko-sensei’s Kazuhiko Inoue, who so skillfully transitions from petulant kitty demanding ramen to majestic protector growling down those who threaten his charge.  Manga-ka Midorikawa’s sidebar comments have nothing but appreciative, admiring things to say about the anime staff and their requests for her input on even the little things, like how many toes Nyanko-sensei has on his kitty paws.

That One Spooky Night (Kids Can Press, 9781554537518)

Jennifer: I was disappointed with this: not really what I had hoped for and I felt it had limited appeal. I liked Bigfoot Boy better (and who doesn’t love Faith Erin Hicks?) but I always feel that Torres’ stories, while interesting, are somehow…unfinished. Felt like a lot of book for not much story. I won’t buy it for the library until more volumes come out.

Paradise Kiss Volume 1 (Vertical, 9781935654711)

Robin: I am SO HAPPY to see Paradise Kiss returning, as an omnibus and via Veritcal to boot!  So classy.  Now I can cheerfully add it back to all of my MUST READ NOW manga recommended lists.

Snow: Like Robin, I’m THRILLED for Paradise Kiss.

Pippi Moves In (Drawn & Quarterly, 9781770460997)

Robin: I am happy to see Pippi arriving here, especially as Drawn & Quarterly does such amazing editions, for anything they put their mind to, really.

Saga Volume 1 (Image Comics, 9781607066019)

Robin: I’m happy to have Saga available in a form (paperback volume) I can buy for the library and thus recommend it heartily to all of my comics fans, sci-fi fans, and everyone in between.

Jenny: For new-to-me titles, I think I’m most looking forward to Saga.  The story sounds original and involving and I can’t stop looking at the beautiful art.

Skip Beat! Volume 29 (Viz, 9781421543345)

Jenny: I’m impatient as always for more Skip Beat!, awesomeness that it is.  Every time I finish a volume, I’m instantly checking to see when the next one’s out.  If they ever make another season of the equally awesome anime, they’ll probably hear my uncontainable squee all the way in Japan.

Snarked! Volume 2: Ships and Sealing Wax (BOOM! Studios, 9781608862764)

Matthew: Snarked Vol. 2 came out?  I didn’t even know Snarked Vol. 1 was out!  *rushes to order*

Transposes (Northwest Press, 9780984594085)

Caitlin: I’d like to get a look at this, for sure. The artwork looks nice and it’s always good to find stories of typically underrepresented people – in this case, queer-identified transgender men. Should spark some interesting discussion too, I hope!

A Trip to the Bottom of the World with Mouse (TOON Books, 978-1935179191)

Jennifer: I reviewed this at my personal blog – I liked it much better than Viva’s picture book, which garnered a lot of artistic praise but I felt was lacking in kid appeal.
