Toriko, volumes 1-6

In the gourmet age, everyone’s looking for the next best meal. However, the best meals are always the most dangerous. Enter Toriko, a gourmet hunter trained to take down the toughest meals. With his better-than-an-average-human’s nose and brawn-over-brains fighting style, Toriko is ready to complete his full-course meal. This meal is composed of the most rare and delicious foods selected by the hunters themselves, and, as a result, reflects their skill and taste. Along the way, one of Toriko’s clients actually joins him, a chef named Komura who wants to see what he is actually cooking while it’s alive.

The story takes place in a large world with lots of original concepts, mostly about food. The author is very consistent with these original concepts, such as a timeline and mythology. In the first six volumes I read, there wasn’t very much relationship development between characters. However, characters were constantly powering up and getting stronger after each arc. There are so many references to things about food that it may seem a bit shallow after some time, but it’s all consistent to the story.

The art is very elaborate in certain places. For one thing, the food is always drawn with great detail. Even for someone like me who doesn’t love meat, the meat as it was drawn made me want to eat some. The animal designs are unique, as well as the character designs (with the exception of Toriko’s chef partner). One of the most stand out characteristics of the character designs is the muscle detail. Especially for Toriko, the most muscular of all the characters, they were well defined and showed that he was extremely strong.

Viz’s rating is T (Teen, 13+) and I agree. There’s lots of fantasy violence with the constant battles, and every so often characters swear. There’s also some innuendo, but it’s definitely not explicit. In once scene, a wolf is giving birth to a cub, but there’s not specific things shown.
