The Lunch Lady and her trusty sidekicks are back for another adventure in her newest book, Lunch Lady and the Mutant Mathletes! Lunch Lady isn’t just a Lunch Lady, she’s a tough as nails and smart as a whip crime fighter who keeps her alter ego under wraps. Except for her fellow lunch lady and sidekick Betty and the Breakfast Bunch – Hector, Milmoe and Dee, three awesome kids who are always there to help Lunch Lady out of a jam – no one knows the secret life that Lunch Lady leads, and she wants to keep it that way. Get out of the way – not only is Lunch Lady serving lunch, she’s serving up justice, too!
In our latest episode The Breakfast Bunch is being punished for the “bad behavior” they displayed during their field trip, recounted in Lunch Lady’s previous adventure, Lunch Lady and the Field Trip Fiasco. Principal Hernandez is laying down the law – The Breakfast Bunch must join the school’s Mathletes team. The Bunch sure isn’t happy, but the kids learn to deal with it. As they start winning meet after meet, their attitudes definitely improve. But there’s something strange going on with the one team that stands between them and the Math Bowl crown! As always, Lunch Lady and Betty are two steps ahead of everyone. They just know there is something not quite right with the Willowby Academy Mathletes – but what? Lunch Lady and Betty are on the case, and you won’t believe what they discover!
As always, the Lunch Lady books are funny, engaging and will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. The extreme cartoony nature of the drawings brings to life Lunch Lady and her out-of-this-world exploits and discoveries. The colors keep to a basic white, yellow, and grey theme, and this neutral tone palate perfectly complements the outlandish nature of the stories. It’s nice to see an awesome woman superhero use her smarts and her skills to foil the plot and save the day. Recommended for all readers who wonder what their lunch ladies and teachers really do when they’re not at school.
