Course Reading lists in the format:

For Isn’t Otaku a Kind of Sushi? Japanese Manga and Anime Continuing Education Course, Simmons College

last offered February 2011

The following list is to help you select a title to read. If you find another title you’d like to read instead, please send me a message (email or via Moodle) and just let me know what you’re reading.

For every week, I ask that if possible everyone read the starred red titles so we have books in common to discuss. In week three and four, there are two titles, but let me know if that’s a problem in terms of timing — I was just trying to give you all the most diverse reading I could.

If you cannot get a copy of the required title, I’ve added an online alternative (where the full volume available to be read online.) Look for these titles in green. **I’ve worked out an arrangement with the publisher Digital Manga to allow all of us to have access to a selection of their titles online, so most of these title will be from Digital Manga. They have graciously agreed to allow each of you to be set up with a free reviewer account on their digital website, http://www.emanga.com/, so that you can read and preview titles. You should have gotten an email directly from Digital Manga about your emanga username and password — let me know if you didn’t get one!

Check out Udon’s very clear “how to read” manga examples.

Week One: Classic Graphic Novels for Adult Readers

Week Four: Adult Manga
For our fourth week, getting into what happens when manga grows up — i.e. seinen (adult men’s) manga and josei (adult women’s) manga. You’ll find that some (Nana and Honey and Clover) have been marketed in the US to teen girls, but they were in fact josei titles in Japan.

Josei also includes yaoi (a subgenre of male/male romances written by women for women), which is popular both here and in Japan. This subgenre, at least currently, represents a lot of the josei that is currently available in the US, despite its status as a niche genre in both countries. If any of you would like to give yaoi a go, let me know and I can recommend titles from the list according to your taste.
